There were cars and a bus too from the vintage era where the registration plates carried numbers with the prefix A to Z. They were on display at the headquarters of the Automobile Association of Ceylon, Galle Face Colombo 3, from 9am to 11 am. There after these vintage beauties took to the roads in a convoy from the AAC premises and proceeded to Slave Island and the road by Beira Lake, then to Dharmapala Mawatha,F.R Senanayake Mawatha, Horton Place, Kinsey Road, Baudhaloka mawatha past the BMICH, Keppitipola Mawatha thimbirigasyaya Road, Havelock Road, Dickmans Road and onto Galle Road and ending up at the Galle Face Hotel. This event celebrated the 105th annivesary of the AAC in association with the Vintage Car Owners Club. There were many nice and well restored Cars. Looking good were a nice Sunbeam Talbot, Hillman, some Austin 7's,a Hupmobile, Fiats, one Rolls Royce and a Jaguar . This visit brought back memories to me of visiting these events many years ago and also taking part in a few with my father Sharker Mohideen where he drove the same old Rolls Royce on show today. He also owned a Sunbeam Talbot drop head coupe the saloon of which took part on the day. Altogether an nice and enjoyable event. Some of you may recall in 1969 that the Ozlanka webmaster paraded the streets of Colombo in an Amude in his old crock, taking away the price for the crockiest old crock. That race was from Mount Lavinia Hotel to Galle Face. Part way on the road, the steering column broke and his group simply lifted the car and turned it around at every bend. Great fun for all. Here are some photos of those beautiful cars that took part in the rally. |
