Vivid Sydney Opens Its Fifth Year With Spectacular Lights Show   902 B   Jun 9, 2013

Vivid Sydney is the biggest light, music and arts festival this part of the world. It is now on its fifth year and ran from May 24 to June 10.

This year, the festival commissioned the Spinifex Group, one of Australia's most artistic innovators, to lead the 3D-orchestrated visual extravaganza. They were assisted in the creative execution by some of the world's imaginative personalities from the US, Germany, Italy, Greece, Malaysia, Korea, Poland, Brazil and New Zealand. These artists are responsible for one-third of the exquisite lighting installations.

For the first time in the world also, the famed Harbour Bridge of Sydney comes fully alive through an "interactive lighting installation" found in the western side of the bridge.

The public is given the chance to adorn the bridge according to their preferred design by just using the interactive touch screen controlling the light display.

Night of Hope – More than just a Dream…   898 B   May 25, 2013

The Sri Lanka Association of New South Wales continued marking its 40th Anniversary this year by working hard – not for itself – but for those less fortunate from an Island home to which Sri Lankan Australians owe much more than mere lip service. The dream behind the Night of Hope came from community members attending last year’s Sri Lanka Association of NSW Cancer Awareness Seminar who encouraged the Association dedicate a function to the most worthy of causes – to the Children’s Leukaemia Cancer Ward at the National Cancer Institute of Maharagama in Sri Lanka. Accordingly the entirety of the proceeds from the night are earmarked for upgrading the facilities necessary to care for Sri Lanka’s most vulnerable and long suffering children with leukaemia at the Maharamgama cancer hospital. But dreams alone cannot yield a hope dividend without some elbow grease on the ground. Charity fundraisers are often notorious for their inability to produce a meaningful net gain – after paying for costs – to go towards the charitable purpose of the fundraiser and support the good intentions of the attendees. Fortunately the SLA Night of Hope had some serious elbow grease aplenty to back its claims for the Night of Hope. To each of our guests, whose support and attendance for SLA functions continues to build on last year’s success in diversifying and renewing our membership and reaching out to the broader Sri Lankan Australian community – you are the Association and you are making a difference.

The Bellbirds do it Bollywood style!   898 B   May 18, 2013

“The most colourful event I’ve ever been to” one delighted guest quipped as she, attired in a dazzling pink Georgette (or was it Benares?) saree studded in gold embroidery with dazzling gold earrings and necklace to match, as she and her partner, in equally eye-catching garb, strode into the Thornleigh Community Centre hall for the Bellbirds Club Bollywood and Hopper Night. She was one of the 208 guests, all dressed in the most creative and colourful of dress that could well have given Bollywood a fair run for its money. It was full house that kept Hyacinth Jones and Ingrid Keunemen at the entrance on their toes.

All credit to Ingrid Keuneman for her hall décor which she designed and had executed with great flair. A considerable amount of time and hard work by the committee, led by President Angela Jansz, contributed to the success of the event.

Gordon Rebeira, Roger Menzies, with Nihara Loos adding to the vocals, kept everybody swinging and swaying to their rhythm.
