Highly skilled migrants will be given preference when applying to migrate to Australia, but Indians prefer to return home |

Australia's government will give priority to skilled migrants who line up a job before they arrive under a shake-up of the country's immigration policy, the Australian newspaper said. Immigration Minister Chris Evans will announce today that the current list of occupations in demand will be dropped, the newspaper reported, without saying where it got the information. The so-called points test that assesses candidates' qualifications for a visa will also be changed, the newspaper said. A new list of highly skilled professions and trades will be introduced in the middle of the year, the Australian reported. Skilled migrants who don't set up a job before they arrive will find it harder to gain a visa, according to the newspaper. But in the case of Indians this is not what they see and feel. "There are no statistics available. But there are several Indian students who are either leaving or have left and are not coming back. The primary reasons are lack of safe living conditions and absence of job security," says Gautam Gupta, secretary Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA). Over 150,000 Indian students are studying in Australia today. Most of these students were planning to graduate with degrees in some of the most required job categories in Australia. |
