During these years he has had the opportunity to pursue his interests in Sri Lankan history and antiquarian art, especially for prints, engravings and watercolour drawings. He has published three books: ‘Early prints of Ceylon’, ‘Illustrations and Views of Dutch Ceylon’ and ‘19th Century Newspaper Engravings of Ceylon’. Dr de Silva has reproduced in full Bailey’s manuscript which has 200 or so sonnets and verses together with accompanying notes compiled between 1832 and 1834, when Bailey travelled round the island on horseback, following the death of his wife soon after his arrival in Ceylon. Thiru Arumugam on “A River for Jaffna” Thiru Arumugam is the author of “19th Century American Medical Missionaries in Jaffna, Ceylon” and has just returned from a whirlwind lecture tour of Sri Lanka. The idea for a river in Jaffna was first mooted  by Captain Hendrile van Reede, a Dutch engineer who accompanied the Dutch Governor, Ryckloff van Goens on his visit to Jaffna in 1665.  Construction work started in the 1950s, but work was not completed as funds dried up and whatever was done soon fell into disrepair.  This project has been resurrected and Stages 1 & 2 have now been completed.  Still to be done is Stage 3 – the conversion of Elephant Pass lagoon into a freshwater lagoon. Completion of this project will give a tremendous boost to agriculture in and around the Jaffna peninsula. Non-members interested in the culture and history of Sri Lanka  (including young adults) are welcome. Admission is free.
