In these unprecedented times, the Fairfield City Council led by Mayor Frank Carbone created a temporary Drive-in movie theatre as an initiative for local communities to get out of the house and bring some normality in our lives. To assist with this great initiative and with the lack of Sri Lankan events in Sydney, SYDNEY අපි (organisers) came together to bring our modern-day version on the classic drive-in cinema experience to Sydney Sri Lankan community. The movie ‘Thaala’ was beamed across the night sky on the 28th June 2020 at the Fairfield Showgrounds.

“Thaala” is a sinhalese musical drama film great for families directed by Paalitha Perera and produced by Nilan Weerasinghe. It stars Hemal Ranasinghe and Kalani Dodantenna in lead roles along with Jayalath Manoratne and Kaushalya Fernando. Assistance given to screen by Lanka Events NSW.

The Drive-in experience brought real joy and smiles to our people and it was a perfect antidote in these uncertain times. It was a sight to see where all the people enjoyed this perfect winter night in their blankets, UGGs and snuggled in their cars.

Overall, it was a successful event and we were able to deliver it within a safe yet fun environment.

In order to facilitate with the current restrictions, cars were parked 2m apart, the radio on a FM frequency.  Individual choice of dinner were pre-ordered through CHEF CEYLON Toongabbie and were ready to pick up at the drive-in. This minimised guest from needing to exit their cars.

There were great Sinhala songs played before the movie and during the short interval for those to enjoy in their seats.

Overall, it was a successful night and we were able to deliver it within a safe yet enjoyable environment. Tickets were sold at $30 per car, which works out much cheaper than going to the normal cinema.
