New regulations for sports elections to be considered by Parliament with an aim to weed out undesirable individuals

By Chandani Kirinde Source Sunday Times

Parliament on Tuesday will debate strict new regulations related to National Sports Associations. In terms of these regulations, those directly or indirectly involved in gaming business and those convicted by a court for any offence and imprisoned for more than six months will be disqualified from holding office in sports bodies. The regulations being introduced by Sports Minister Mahindanada Aluthgamge under the Sports Act will be applicable to 48 sports including cricket, rugby, athletic and boxing.

Others who will be disqualified from holding office include professional journalists, media group owners, parents or family members of a player in a national pool, players, agents or managers of sports persons, non-nationals or those involved in the manufacture, assembly, production, sale or distribution of sports items.

Under the new regulations, a person who has served a term of office as president, secretary, treasurer, vice-president, assistant secretary and assistant treasurer of any national association will not be eligible for re-election to any of these posts — unless the Minister of Sports gives written permission.

No person will also be nominated for election as an official or committee member in any national association, other than the treasurer or the assistant treasurer unless he or she has represented Sri Lanka in that respective sport or in a major tournament approved by that Association.

The regulations also lay down rules of conduct for Sports Associations. The regulations will be debated on Tuesday and Wednesday in Parliament.
